So this weekend Will the G and I decided to try out a little crit racing, hoffen style. Which meant party hard in Savannah for Kelly Fish's Bday for three days then racing Saturday and Sunday after St.Pats in 5 points.
Saturdays race was cold and rainy with temps barely reaching 50 and a constant mist with an occasional drenching downpour. This being our first road race after cross season we were both still in cross racing mode. Go hard from the start...! bad idea! We quickly realized road racing is a tactics game. Three riders broke away sometime in the second or third lap. Figuring someone besides us would want to bring them back eventually, we let them go. We soon found out no one wanted to do any kind of work to help me real them back in. So after trying to bring back the break by myself, my legs soon gave up. And all the followers behind me were able to out sprint me to the finish, going from 4th to 8th. Will followed shortly behind me with 11th.
Sundays race, weather wise, was about the same except no misting, just steady rain. The front side of the course was a fast downhill while the back side was mostly an uphill climb. We both planned on trying to race smarter than the day before, sitting in most of the time and making sure at least one of us would cover any attacks if they happened and it seemed to work. I pulled out a 4th place finish and will right behind in 5th.
So i think its safe to say that road racing it totally, completely different than cross and we still have a lot to learn.
and sorry kids no pics to enjoy. besides im sure your tired of seeing will and my faces by now...
